Recently I begin a quest for organic K cups. They’re surprisingly challenging to find. I’ve been hearing so much about non-organic coffee being one of the worst offenders as far as pesticides. Literally, they are doused and laden with the stuff. The message I’ve gotten, loud and clear: if you’re going to drink coffee, drink organic. Hence my quest for organic K cups… that actually taste good!
Now, I know K Cups are not exactly environmentally friendly and it does bother me. That being said, sometimes you just need to grab a cup and go, and for that they are very convenient. My husband has to jam out of the house early for work on weekdays and he begged me for a year to get a Keurig. We had been doing French press, which is awesome – but time consuming and labor intensive for during the work week. Now we reserve the press for weekends.
I wanted to try a bunch at the same time so I could compare. I found a website called ubuycoffee where I found good prices and free shipping for orders over $75. They also let you pay with Paypal, my preferred payment method when ordering online. I ordered 4 different types of organic coffee from them. Here’s the skinny:
Coffee People Tree Hugger: Coffee People apparently first hailed from Oregon – now they are part of the Green Mountain family – which I have to admit I have been disappointed in. I remember Green Mountain from my New Hampshire days and it was (I thought) a really healthy brand- now I see that many of their coffees have artificial flavors, which I find so unnecessary and off-putting; you really have to look at the labels now to make sure about what you’re getting. Also many of their brands non-organic. But I digress- this Coffee People Tree Hugger is organic and delicious…my favorite by far! It is not bitter at all, something I really can’t stand. It isn’t overly strong, just a nice friendly cup with subtle chocolatey overtones that taste delish with soy creamer. Use the middle icon (a shorter cup) otherwise it’s not as flavorful.
San Francisco Organic Breakfast Blend: Let me start by saying I love what this company is doing with their K cups! There is only a small covering of plastic on the top, the rest is a mesh basket. I like this because it’s less plastic into the environment and it’s probably also healthier than going through plastic like traditional K Cups. Unfortunately, this flavor was a little bitter for me.
San Francisco Organic Rainforest Blend: I liked this one ok. Not in love. I found this one slightly bitter as well.
San Francisco Organic Java Love: This was my second favorite. Not as bitter; a nice decent cup of coffee.
I also stumbled upon Newman’s Own Special Blend Organic K Cups in Costco! These are pretty good too, a very robust flavor but not too bitter if you use the middle setting and a good amount of creamer. And I always love the fact that when you buy Paul’s, a portion of the proceeds is donated to charity!
One final organic K cup I just discovered (in Fresh & Easy) was Marley Coffee. Yes, to my delight there IS a relation- Bob Marley’s son Rohan Marley started the company as a way to promote sustainable farming practices and support rural farmers in Jamaica. So down with that! I tried the One Love (medium roast) and the Get Up, Stand Up. I liked them both, with a slight preference towards the One Love.
Do you have a favorite organic K cup brand? Do tell!
